MIDI ThruBox Version 0.1 Beta
Copyright (c) 1993 by Douglas Clinton
Please see the end of this file for distribution information.
Introduction
============
MIDI ThruBox is a utility which will connect a MIDI input device on
your computer to a MIDI output device. This means that when you are not
running a sequencer or similar software you do not have to fiddle with
your MIDI cables in order to connect your keyboard to a sound module.
In addition, MIDI ThruBox gives you the option of splitting each MIDI
channel so that all notes below a specified key get redirected to a
different MIDI channel. For example, if you have a master keyboard
which transmits on channel one you can cause all notes below middle C
to be redirected to channel two. This means that you can play left and
right-hand parts using different sounds.
Running MIDI ThruBox
====================
When you run MIDI ThruBox it will appear as an icon at the bottom of
your screen. You cannot de-iconify ThruBox. ThruBox add two new items to
the icon menu to give you access to its facilities; "About..." will
bring up the About box giving you the version number and the "MIDI"
provides options for configuring the input and output device and setting
up a split map.
Configuring the Input and Output Device
=======================================
Selecting "MIDI->Configure..." from the menu will bring up the MIDI
device configuration dialog. This has two combo boxes which let you
select the devices to be used for input and output of MIDI data. You can
also select "<none>" for either of the devices in which case no MIDI
device will be opened.
The information on MIDI devices will be written to the file THRUBOX.INI
so that the configuration will be remembered the next time you run
ThruBox.
Setting up a split map
======================
Selecting "MIDI->Split Map..." will bring up the Channel Split Setup
dialog. Using this you can set split points for each MIDI channel.
There are 16 pairs of text boxes on the dialog, one pair for each MIDI
channel. The "Split Point" is the MIDI note number at which the split
should occur. The "Channel Below" is the MIDI channel to which note
events which are below the split point are redirected.
If the split point is zero then no note events for that channel will be
re-directed.
The split information is written to the file THRUBOX.INI so that the
split map need not be set up each time ThruBox is run.
Distribution
============
MIDI ThruBox is currently distributed as "ContributionWare". This means
that you are under no legal obligation to send me any money but if you
find ThruBox useful and would like to contribute towards future
development of this and other programs then I would appreciate it. The
amount you send is up to you but if you contribute more than 20 pounds
sterling I will add you to a mailing list to keep you updated on future
developements and provide free electronic upgrades to ThruBox. I will
happily accept checks in foreign currencies.
You may redistribute ThruBox as long as you distribute all the
constituent files as a whole, unmodified.
Please send any bug reports, contributions or suggestions for
enhancements to:

I am very interested in hearing any suggestions you have for improving
MIDI ThruBox. Current ideas I have are:
* Setting synth patches
* Multiple input/output devices
* Ability to chain split/patch setups
